Cats nibble plants, so if you share your home with one it’s worth knowing which houseplants are non-toxic and which to keep out. The classifications below follow the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plant database — the standard reference. Where a plant’s safety isn’t clearly established, we don’t call it safe. This is general guidance, not a substitute for veterinary advice.

How to read “safe”

  • Non-toxic — not expected to poison a cat, per ASPCA. (Any plant can cause mild stomach upset if a cat eats a lot.)
  • Toxic — contains compounds that can harm a cat; keep out of reach or out of the home.
  • Uncertain — if reliable data is lacking, treat as not-confirmed-safe.

Common houseplants that are TOXIC to cats — avoid or keep out of reach

  • True lilies (Lilium/Hemerocallis) — extremely dangerous to cats; even small amounts (including pollen) can cause fatal kidney failure. Keep them out of the home entirely.

If your cat nibbles a plant

For non-toxic plants, mild stomach upset is the worst you’d usually expect. For toxic plants — and especially any lily exposure — contact your vet or an animal poison line immediately; don’t wait for symptoms. Keeping tempting plants physically out of reach is the most reliable protection.

Quick questions

What is the safest houseplant for cats? Spider plant, calathea, peperomia and Phalaenopsis orchids are all ASPCA non-toxic and easy to grow.

Are succulents safe for cats? Some are (haworthia), but many aren’t (aloe, jade, some euphorbias) — check the specific plant rather than assuming.

Why are lilies singled out? True lilies are exceptionally toxic to cats — even pollen or vase water can cause fatal kidney failure — so they should not be in a cat household.
