Dogs interact with plants differently from cats — they chew whole leaves, dig in pots and can swallow larger amounts, and floor-level or hanging plants are all fair game. The non-toxic and toxic classifications below follow the ASPCA plant database. Most non-toxic houseplants are safe for both cats and dogs, but the dog-specific risks are worth understanding. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice.

What’s different about dogs

  • They eat more. A dog may chew a whole leaf or dig up a plant, so even “mildly irritating” plants can cause more upset than a cat’s cautious nibble.
  • Bulbs and soil additives. Dogs dig — bulbs (many are toxic) and fertilizer/soil amendments in the pot can be a bigger hazard than for cats.
  • Size matters. A small dog eating a toxic plant gets a proportionally larger dose.

  • Especially dangerous: sago palm (Cycas) is highly toxic to dogs and often fatal — dogs readily chew it; keep it out of the home. Many bulbs (amaryllis and others) are toxic and tempting to diggers.

If your dog eats a plant

Identify the plant, remove any remaining pieces, and for anything toxic — especially sago palm or bulbs — contact your vet or an animal poison line straight away rather than waiting for symptoms. For non-toxic plants, watch for mild stomach upset. Raising plants off the floor and blocking access to pots (dogs dig) prevents most incidents.

Quick questions

What houseplants are safe for dogs? Spider plant, calathea, peperomia, ponytail palm, areca/kentia palm and Boston fern are all ASPCA non-toxic.

Are the cat-safe and dog-safe lists the same? Largely yes — most non-toxic houseplants are safe for both — but dogs’ chewing and digging make bulbs, sago palm and fertilizer in pots a bigger relative risk.
