- Symptoms: Soft, wet, foul-smelling collapse of leaves or a spreading sunken brown spot with a yellow halo; races through warm, wet, poorly ventilated conditions.
- Treatment & Management: Excise infected tissue immediately with a sterile tool, keep foliage dry, increase ventilation and space plants apart. A copper bactericide helps protect neighbours; sterilise cutting tools between every plant.
- Botrytis petal blight (Botrytis cinerea):
- Symptoms: Small brown or pink spots peppering open flowers in cool, damp, still air, shortening bloom life.
- Treatment & Management: Improve air movement and lower humidity around blooms, remove spotted flowers promptly, and avoid wetting the flowers when watering.
- Fungal leaf spot (Cercospora, Guignardia spp.):
- Symptoms: Small yellow spots that enlarge into brown or black sunken patches, sometimes in rings, on older leaves under damp stagnant conditions.
- Treatment & Management: Remove affected leaves, improve airflow and light, keep foliage dry, and apply a protectant fungicide if it spreads.
- Orchid viruses — CymMV & ORSV (Cymbidium mosaic virus, Odontoglossum ringspot virus):
- Symptoms: Colour-break streaking in flowers, mosaic mottling, chlorotic or necrotic ringspots and flecks on leaves; symptoms vary and can be subtle. There is no cure.

Growing Difficulties & Abiotic Problems
- Sunburn / leaf scorch:
- Cause & Symptoms: Bleached white or black dry patches on leaves exposed to sudden strong sun, often after a cloudy spell or a move outdoors.
- Correction Strategy: Provide bright but filtered light and acclimatise gradually to any increase; a leaf that is warm to the touch is too hot. Damaged tissue will not recover but the plant will.
- Root loss from overwatering / stale mix:
- Cause & Symptoms: Limp, shrivelled pseudobulbs and leathery leaves despite frequent watering, with brown mushy dead roots when unpotted — the mix has broken down and gone airless.
- Correction Strategy: Grow in a coarse, free-draining bark or mixed medium and repot before it decomposes (typically every year or two). Water thoroughly then let the mix approach dryness; ensure pots drain freely.
- Fertiliser / salt burn:
- Cause & Symptoms: Blackened dead leaf tips and a white crust on pots or mix from over-strength feeding or salt build-up.
- Correction Strategy: Feed ‘weakly, weekly’ at quarter to half the label strength during growth, and flush the mix with plain water periodically to leach salts.
- Bud blast:
- Cause & Symptoms: Buds yellow and drop before opening, triggered by a sudden environmental swing, dry air, gas fumes or a change of position while in bud.
- Correction Strategy: Keep conditions steady while buds develop, maintain humidity, and avoid moving or exposing the plant to draughts, ripening fruit or heating fumes.
What Helps — Products & Tools
Keep 70% isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds on hand for spot-treating scale and mealybug, plus horticultural or neem oil and insecticidal soap for the general pest set and a labelled miticide for stubborn mites. Blue sticky traps monitor thrips. For rots, use a sterile blade, cinnamon or a copper/physan drench, and improve airflow rather than reaching for a spray. Sterilise cutting tools between plants — the single most important step against virus and bacterial spread. Spray oils in the evening.
