- Prevention & Control: Net the crop with fine insect mesh from planting to exclude the egg-laying butterflies and moths – the single most effective step. Squash yellow egg clusters and hand-pick caterpillars, and encourage parasitic wasps and birds. Spray Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt kurstaki) in the evening onto the foliage for heavy infestations; it targets caterpillars only.
- Diamondback moth caterpillars (Plutella xylostella):
- Symptoms: Small, pale-green, wriggly caterpillars that make ‘windowpane’ patches and small holes on leaf undersides and can heavily damage hearts and heads; they breed fast and have developed resistance to many insecticides.
- Prevention & Control: Exclude with fine netting and practise rotation and good hygiene. Encourage the many natural enemies by avoiding broad-spectrum sprays. Bt or spinosad control them when netting is impractical, but rotate active ingredients to avoid resistance and time sprays to young larvae.
- Cabbage aphid & peach-potato aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae / Myzus persicae):
- Symptoms: Dense grey-white, mealy, waxy aphid colonies packed on leaf undersides, in the hearts and on flower shoots, causing curling, stunting, honeydew and sooty mould; they also transmit viruses. Colonies hide deep in the heart where sprays miss.
- Prevention & Control: Inspect undersides and hearts regularly and blast off early colonies with water. Encourage ladybirds, hoverflies, lacewings and parasitic wasps, and remove and destroy old brassica stumps where the aphid overwinters. Treat persistent infestations with insecticidal soap or neem, aiming well into the undersides and hearts.
- Flea beetles (Phyllotreta spp.):
- Symptoms: Tiny black or bronze beetles that jump when disturbed and pepper the leaves – especially of seedlings – with countless small round ‘shot-holes’; heavy attack checks or kills young plants in warm, dry spells.
- Prevention & Control: Protect seedlings and young plants with fleece or fine mesh, keep them well watered and growing fast (stress worsens damage), and raise transplants to a robust size before setting out. Yellow sticky traps and a diatomaceous-earth dusting help; established plants outgrow light damage.
- Cabbage root fly (Delia radicum):
- Symptoms: Sudden wilting, blue-tinged foliage and stunting of young plants, whose roots are eaten by white maggots that tunnel the root system; plants may keel over and pull up easily. Worst on spring and autumn transplants.
- Prevention & Control: Fit brassica collars (discs of card, felt or matting) snugly around each stem at soil level to stop the fly laying at the base, and/or grow under insect mesh. Rotate brassicas and firm plants in well. There is no easy rescue once maggots are present, so prevention is essential.
- Cabbage whitefly (Aleyrodes proletella):
- Symptoms: Small white flies that rise in clouds from leaf undersides when plants are disturbed, leaving honeydew and black sooty mould on lower leaves; more of a cosmetic nuisance on leafy brassicas than a yield-killer, but persistent, especially on overwintering kale.
- Prevention & Control: Remove and compost heavily fouled old lower leaves, clear away finished brassica plants that harbour them, and encourage natural enemies. Hose off or spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil onto the undersides for bad infestations; whitefly are hard to eradicate, so focus on keeping numbers tolerable.
Diseases & Fungal Issues
- Clubroot (Plasmodiophora brassicae):
- Symptoms: Stunted, wilting plants that flag in warm weather and recover overnight; pulling them reveals grossly swollen, distorted, club-like galled roots. A soil-borne organism that persists for many years (up to ~20) and thrives in acidic, wet soil – the most serious and long-lasting brassica disease.
- Treatment & Management: There is no cure, so prevent it: never introduce it on soil, boots or bought-in plants; practise long rotations away from all brassicas; raise soil pH by liming towards neutral-to-alkaline; and sharply improve drainage. Grow clubroot-resistant varieties where available, raise sturdy transplants in clean module compost, and remove and destroy (do not compost) affected roots.
- Downy mildew (Hyaloperonospora parasitica):
- Symptoms: Pale yellow, angular blotches bounded by veins on the upper leaf surface, with a fluffy off-white to grey mould beneath in cool, wet, humid conditions; badly affected seedlings and leaves yellow and die. Common on young plants and dense foliage.
- Treatment & Management: Sow thinly and space plants for airflow, avoid overhead watering late in the day, and remove infected lower leaves. Practise rotation and clear crop debris. Copper-based fungicide protects a valuable crop in a wet spell, but ventilation and dry foliage are the main defence.
- Black rot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris):
- Symptoms: Characteristic V-shaped yellow lesions spreading inwards from the leaf margins, with the veins inside the V turning black; leaves yellow, wither and drop, and the vascular system blackens, sometimes rotting whole heads. A seed-borne and splash-spread bacterial disease favoured by warm, wet weather.
- Treatment & Management: Start with clean, certified or hot-water-treated seed, since it is largely seed-borne. Rotate away from brassicas, avoid working among wet plants, control splashing and cruciferous weeds, and remove and destroy infected plants and debris. There is no effective chemical cure once plants are infected, so prevention and sanitation are everything.
- Alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria brassicae / A. brassicicola):
- Symptoms: Dark brown to black spots with concentric ‘target-board’ rings and often a yellow halo on leaves and heads, enlarging in warm, wet weather and disfiguring or rotting curds and florets; also seed-borne.
- Treatment & Management: Use clean seed, rotate, space for airflow and avoid prolonged leaf wetness; remove and destroy affected debris. A copper or protectant fungicide helps protect heads in a wet season, but cultural measures and clean seed are the foundation.
- White blister / white rust (Albugo candida):
- Symptoms: Raised, shiny white blister-like pustules on leaf undersides (and sometimes distorted, swollen growth) that burst to release white spores, mainly in cool, moist conditions.
- Treatment & Management: Improve airflow and drainage, avoid overhead watering, rotate and remove infected leaves and debris. Resistant varieties and, if needed, a protectant fungicide manage persistent problems; it is usually more disfiguring than devastating.
Growing Difficulties & Abiotic Problems
- Leaf tipburn:
- Cause & Symptoms: Brown, scorched leaf margins (‘tipburn’) on fast-growing kale, caused by localised calcium shortage under rapid growth, heat or irregular watering rather than by disease.
- Correction Strategy: Keep watering steady and even, avoid heavy nitrogen surges that force soft growth, and maintain adequate calcium and balanced soil moisture. Remove affected outer leaves; inner growth is unaffected.
- Nutrient deficiencies (nitrogen, magnesium):
- Cause & Symptoms: Overall pale, yellowing older leaves and weak growth signal nitrogen shortage in these hungry crops, while interveinal yellowing of older leaves indicates magnesium deficiency, common on light or acidic soils.
- Correction Strategy: Grow in rich, firm, well-limed soil with plenty of organic matter and feed with a balanced nitrogen-rich fertiliser during leafy growth; correct magnesium shortage with Epsom-salt (magnesium sulfate) as a foliar feed and address soil pH.
- Bolting & heat/water stress:
- Cause & Symptoms: Premature bolting (running to flower), loose or open heads, and poor curd/head formation follow heat, drought, cold checks to young plants, or irregular watering – brassicas dislike stress and fluctuation.
- Correction Strategy: Grow in the cooler parts of the season, keep soil evenly moist with mulch and regular deep watering, avoid transplanting stress and root-binding, and choose varieties suited to the season. Steady, unchecked growth gives the best heads and leaves.
- Root rot & waterlogging:
- Cause & Symptoms: Yellowing, wilting and rotting roots in heavy, waterlogged soil (which also strongly favours clubroot); plants sit and sulk in cold, wet ground.
- Correction Strategy: Improve drainage, work in organic matter, and grow on ridges or raised beds in heavy soil; avoid overwatering. Firm planting plus good drainage keeps roots healthy.
