Growing Difficulties & Abiotic Problems
- Root rot from overwatering / stale mix:
- Cause & Symptoms: Constantly wet or decomposed potting media suffocate and rot the roots, causing limp canes, shrivelling and collapse.
- Correction Strategy: Use a coarse, free-draining orchid mix, water thoroughly then let it approach dryness, and repot into fresh media every year or two before the mix breaks down.
- Cane shrivel / dehydration:
- Cause & Symptoms: Underwatering, dead roots or low humidity shrivel the pseudobulbs/canes and pleat the leaves.
- Correction Strategy: Check roots and rehydrate gradually, raise humidity with trays or grouping, and water more attentively once healthy roots regrow; balance moisture against the plant’s rest period.
- Sunburn / leaf scorch:
