Growing a fruit tree from a seed is one of the most rewarding — and most misunderstood — things you can do in the garden. It is cheap, easy to start, and fascinating to watch, but a seed-grown tree does not always behave like the fruit it came from. This guide explains which fruit trees come reasonably true from seed, which need grafting, how to germinate the seed, and how long you will really wait for fruit.
Will a seed grow the same fruit?
Most cultivated fruit trees are hybrids, so their seedlings are genetically variable — the fruit can be smaller, later or different from the parent. A few types come fairly true (many citrus produce clones through nucellar seedlings, and papaya, guava, and passionfruit are reasonably reliable), while apples, pears and most stone fruit are famously unpredictable from seed. If you want a known variety and a quicker crop, a grafted tree is the reliable route; seed-growing is best for the adventure, for rootstocks, or for species that are hard to buy.
How to germinate fruit seed
- Use fresh seed. Many tropical seeds (mango, lychee, longan, jackfruit, citrus) lose viability quickly — sow them soon after eating the fruit.
- Cold-stratify temperate seed. Apple, pear, plum, peach and other cool-climate seeds usually need weeks of cold, moist chilling in the fridge to break dormancy.
- Scarify hard coats. Very hard seeds may germinate faster after nicking or soaking.
- Warmth and moisture. Tropical seeds germinate best with steady bottom warmth and humidity — a propagator helps.
How long until it fruits?
Seed-grown trees almost always take longer to fruit than grafted ones because they must pass through a juvenile phase first — often 5–10 years or more for tree fruit, versus 2–4 years for a grafted tree. Some quick species (papaya, passionfruit, dragon fruit) fruit within a couple of years; slow ones (mangosteen, many nuts) can take a decade.
When to graft instead
A common strategy is to grow the seedling as a healthy rootstock, then graft a known variety onto it once it is established — you get vigour from the seedling and reliable fruit from the graft. See fruit tree grafting and how and why plants are grafted.
