Grafting joins two plants so they grow as one: a chosen top variety (the scion) fused onto the root system of another (the rootstock). It’s how most fruit trees, many roses and some cacti are produced, because it combines a proven variety with the vigour, size control or disease resistance of a good rootstock. This guide explains the principles — specific techniques and timing vary by plant.
Rootstock and scion
- Rootstock — provides the roots and often controls tree size, hardiness or disease resistance (e.g. dwarfing apple rootstocks).
- Scion — the piece of the variety you want to grow, supplying the fruit, flowers and top growth.
Graft them together and you get a plant with the roots of one and the top of the other — true to the scion variety, every time.
The key to success: matching the cambium
Just under the bark is a thin green layer, the cambium, where growth happens. A graft only takes if the cambium of the scion contacts the cambium of the rootstock so the two can knit together. Clean, matching cuts and firm, sealed contact are everything — this is why grafting rewards sharp tools and practice.
Common graft types
- Whip-and-tongue — matching diagonal cuts with interlocking “tongues”; classic for pencil-thick fruit-tree wood.
- Cleft graft — a scion wedged into a split in a larger stock; good for topworking existing trees.
- Bud grafting (budding) — a single bud slipped under the bark; efficient for roses and fruit trees, done in the growing season.
- Side and bark grafts — variations for particular stock sizes and situations.
Compatibility and timing
Grafts generally only take between closely related plants — usually the same or a closely related species/genus (apple on apple rootstock, not apple on oak). Most bench and whip grafts are done in late winter/early spring using dormant scion wood; budding is done in summer when the bark lifts. Match the method and season to your plant.
Aftercare
Seal the union to keep it from drying, support the graft, and remove any shoots (suckers) that sprout from the rootstock below the union — they’ll outcompete your scion. Once the graft has clearly taken and is growing, gradually remove wraps that could constrict it.

- Cambium layers didn’t line up or make firm contact.
- Incompatible rootstock and scion.
- The union dried out or wasn’t sealed.
- Wrong timing, or the scion wasn’t dormant/viable.
- Rootstock suckers left to overwhelm the scion.
