An “easy” houseplant is really one that forgives the mistakes beginners actually make: missed (or over-enthusiastic) watering, imperfect light and general neglect. The plants below are the most forgiving widely available houseplants — with the one thing that does kill each, so you can avoid it. No plant is “impossible to kill,” but these come close.
What makes a houseplant easy
- Watering tolerance — copes with irregular watering (usually by storing water and preferring to dry out).
- Light flexibility — tolerates a range of light, including lower levels.
- Pest resistance and slow, tidy growth — less fuss, less pruning and repotting.
Note the common thread: nearly all “easy” plants are killed by overwatering, not neglect — see overwatering vs underwatering.
The most forgiving houseplants
| Plant | Light | Water | The one way to kill it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snake plant | Low–bright | Rarely | Overwatering (rots) |
| ZZ plant | Low–bright | Rarely | Overwatering |
| Pothos | Low–bright indirect | When top dries | Constantly soggy soil |
| Cast iron plant | Low | Let dry | Waterlogging |
| Peperomia | Bright indirect | Let dry | Overwatering |
| Jade plant & succulents | Bright | Infrequent | Too much water / too little light |
| Ponytail palm | Bright | Infrequent | Overwatering |
| Christmas cactus | Bright indirect | Moderate | Soggy soil |
Set yourself up to succeed
- Pots with drainage holes — the single biggest fix for overwatering.
- Right light — even easy plants sulk in a truly dark corner; see light requirements and low-light options.
- Water less than you think — check the soil first; most beginner losses are from kindness, not neglect.
- Good mix — a free-draining houseplant mix.
Quick questions
What is the hardest houseplant to kill? Snake plant and ZZ plant are famously tough — they tolerate low light and weeks without water; their main enemy is overwatering.
Why do my “easy” plants keep dying? Almost always overwatering and/or a pot with no drainage — let the soil dry between waterings and use a draining pot.
