- Symptoms: Flat to domed brown or tan bumps clamped along stems and leaf veins that do not brush off. They feed on sap, weaken the plant and, like mealybugs, produce honeydew and sooty mould.
- Prevention & Control: Scrape off light infestations by hand or with an alcohol-dipped swab. Smother the rest with horticultural oil, ensuring the spray reaches under the scale covers, and repeat to catch the mobile crawler stage.
- Fungus Gnats (Bradysia spp.):
- Symptoms: Small dark flies drifting up from the potting mix, a sign of soil kept too wet. The larvae live in the top layer of moist mix and can nibble tender roots and rooting cuttings, weakening young plants.
