“Air-purifying plants” is one of the most repeated houseplant claims — and one of the most overstated. Plants do interact with air, and there’s real lab science behind the idea, but in a normal home the effect on air quality is very small. Here’s an honest look at what the evidence shows, and good houseplants to enjoy for the many other reasons to have them.
Where the claim comes from: the NASA study
The famous “NASA Clean Air Study” (1989) found that certain houseplants removed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene from the air. Crucially, it was done in small, sealed laboratory chambers — conditions very different from a ventilated room in your home. It showed plants can absorb some pollutants, not that a few pots will clean a living room.
What the research shows in real rooms
Later analyses that scaled the lab results to real homes reached a sobering conclusion: to match the air cleaning you already get from normal ventilation, you’d need an impractically large number of plants — on the order of many dozens to hundreds per room. In a typical home, the air exchange from windows, doors and HVAC swamps anything a handful of plants contribute. The takeaway: houseplants are not a meaningful air purifier at realistic densities.
What plants can actually do biologically
- Absorb small amounts of certain VOCs through leaves and, importantly, via microbes in the root zone.
- Release oxygen and a little moisture (raising humidity slightly).
- Contribute to wellbeing — there’s better evidence that plants reduce stress and improve how a space feels than that they clean the air.
Why it doesn’t add up in a real home
Two reasons: the removal rate per plant is tiny relative to a room’s air volume, and real rooms are constantly exchanging air, which both brings in and flushes out pollutants far faster than plants can process them. A single “NASA plant” on a shelf makes an essentially undetectable difference to measured air quality.
What actually improves indoor air
- Ventilation — open windows and good air exchange are by far the most effective step.
- Source control — reduce the things that off-gas or produce particulates in the first place.
- Air filtration — a HEPA filter/purifier removes particulates a plant cannot.

Good houseplants often sold as “air-purifying”
