Plants make a bedroom feel calmer and more inviting, and the best bedroom plants are simply easy, good-looking houseplants suited to the room’s light. You’ll see big claims about bedroom plants boosting oxygen, removing toxins and improving sleep — we’ll keep this evidence-based and focus on plants that genuinely do well and look great by a bed.
An honest word on the common claims
Popular articles claim certain plants dramatically increase bedroom oxygen, purify the air or improve sleep. The evidence doesn’t support meaningful effects at the scale of a few pots: a plant or two releases only tiny amounts of oxygen, and — as covered in our air-purifying plants guide — houseplants don’t clean room air at realistic densities. The real benefits are aesthetic and psychological: greenery is calming and pleasant to wake up to. Enjoy bedroom plants for that, not for unproven health claims.
What actually matters for a bedroom plant
- Easy care — you don’t want fuss in a bedroom.
- Suits the light — bedrooms are often lower-light; match the plant.
- Calm, attractive foliage — the main point.
- Pet-safe if pets sleep with you — check the lists below.
Good bedroom plants
| Plant | Light | Care | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snake plant | Low–bright | Very easy | Tough, upright, tolerates neglect |
| Pothos | Low–bright indirect | Easy | Trails from a shelf or wardrobe |
| Peace lily | Low–medium | Easy | Elegant white flowers |
| Calathea | Bright indirect | Moderate | Beautiful foliage; pet-safe |
| Spider plant | Bright indirect | Very easy | Pet-safe, forgiving |
| Peperomia | Bright indirect | Easy | Compact for a nightstand; pet-safe |
For darker bedrooms
If your bedroom gets little light, choose from low-light houseplants — and remember even these need some daylight, so a totally dark room may need a grow light or a plant rotation.
Pets in the bedroom?
Several popular bedroom plants (snake plant, pothos, peace lily) are toxic to pets. If a cat or dog sleeps with you, pick from cat-safe or dog-safe options such as spider plant, calathea or peperomia.
Quick questions
Do bedroom plants improve sleep or air quality? There’s no strong evidence they meaningfully improve sleep or purify air at normal densities — enjoy them for calm, attractive greenery instead.
What is the best low-maintenance bedroom plant? Snake plant and pothos are hard to kill and suit most bedroom light levels.
