Rust is a common fungal disease that shows up as rusty orange, yellow or brown pustules on leaves — most often on the undersides. It rarely kills a plant outright but weakens it, disfigures foliage and can spread fast in warm, humid weather. What rust is
Rust diseases are caused by a group of fungi that produce masses of powdery spores in raised pustules. Keep foliage as dry as possible — water at the base rather than over the leaves, and water early in the day so any wet leaves dry before evening. Avoid overhead watering and handling plants while wet, which spreads spores.
Resistant varieties & sanitation
Where rust recurs (roses, hollyhocks, snapdragons, beans), choosing resistant varieties is often the most effective step. Remove and dispose of infected leaves promptly (bin them, don’t compost heavily infected material), clear fallen debris where spores overwinter, and clean up thoroughly at season’s end. For rusts with an alternate host, removing nearby host weeds can help.
