“Leaf spot” is one of the most searched plant problems — and one of the most misunderstood, because it is not a single disease. Spots on leaves can be caused by several different fungi, by bacteria, by pests, or by the environment (sun, cold, water and nutrients). This is a diagnostic overview to help you narrow down what you’re actually looking at, because the right response depends entirely on the cause. What “leaf spot” actually means

The term simply describes the symptom — discrete spots, blotches or lesions on foliage — not a cause. Two plants with identical-looking spots can have completely different problems. The goal is to read the pattern and the conditions to work out which broad category you’re in.

Fungal leaf spots

The largest group. Many fungi cause leaf spots (anthracnose, septoria, cercospora and others). Typical clues:

  • Round to irregular spots, often tan or brown with a darker margin, sometimes with a yellow halo or concentric rings.
  • Tiny dark specks (fruiting bodies) may be visible in the spots.
  • Favoured by warm, wet, humid conditions and splashing water.

Bacterial leaf spots

  • Spots often look water-soaked at first (greasy, translucent), frequently angular because they are bounded by leaf veins, and may have a bright yellow halo.

  • Bacterial spots cannot be “cured” — management is sanitation, dry foliage and, where labelled, copper products used preventively.

Environmental and non-disease causes

  • Edema — small corky bumps or blister-like spots from irregular watering and humidity.
  • Cold or water spotting — blemishes from cold water on sensitive foliage or cold damage.

  • Chemical / spray damage — spotting or scorch from products applied in heat or at too-high a rate.

Pest damage that mimics spotting

Some pests leave marks that look like disease: spider mites cause fine pale stippling; thrips leave silvery flecking and dark specks; and several sucking pests cause pale spots. Check leaf undersides for the pests themselves before assuming a disease.

How to narrow it down

  • Pattern — angular and water-soaked suggests bacterial; round with rings/specks suggests fungal; bleached and location-based suggests environmental.
  • Location — only on exposed leaves points to sun/heat; scattered with fuzzy growth points to fungal/bacterial.
  • Conditions — recent wet, humid, crowded weather favours pathogens; a heatwave or a recent spray points elsewhere.
  • Spread — disease usually spreads over time; environmental damage appears and then stops.

What helps across the board

Whatever the cause, a few steps rarely hurt and often help:

  • Keep foliage dry — water at the base, early in the day; avoid overhead watering.
  • Improve airflow — space and thin plants so leaves dry quickly.
  • Sanitation — remove and dispose of badly affected leaves and debris; don’t work among wet plants.
  • Don’t over-react — a few spots on an otherwise healthy plant are often cosmetic.

When treatment is appropriate

Reach for a product only once you have a reasonable idea of the cause and the problem is genuinely worsening. Fungicides do nothing for bacterial spots, environmental scorch or pest stippling — and no single product suits every plant or every leaf spot. If you use one, choose it for your plant and the identified problem and follow the label exactly.

When diagnosis is uncertain

If you can’t confidently place the cause, manage conservatively (dry foliage, airflow, remove the worst leaves) and watch how it develops. Compare against the specific guides below rather than treating blindly.

  • Treating all leaf spots as “a fungus” and spraying fungicide at bacterial, environmental or pest problems.
