Transplant shock is the setback a plant suffers after being repotted, divided, or planted out — wilting, leaf drop, yellowing, or simply stalled growth for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It is caused mainly by root disturbance and an abrupt change of conditions, and the good news is that most plants recover fully if you support them correctly and resist the urge to “fix” them with feeding or flooding.
The short answer
A plant that sulks right after a move is almost always suffering root disturbance, not disease. Keep it in stable, sheltered conditions, keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy, hold off fertiliser, and be patient — new growth is the signal it has re-rooted and recovered.
What causes it
- Root loss or damage when a plant is lifted, teased apart, or pulled from a tight pot — fine feeder roots that do most of the water uptake are easily torn.
- Root-ball dry-out before or during planting, which kills those feeder roots outright.
- A sudden change in light, temperature, humidity or wind — for example an indoor-raised plant put straight into full sun and breeze.
- Planting too deep or too high, or into compacted, airless soil that roots cannot penetrate.
How to prevent it
Disturb the roots as little as possible; keep the root ball intact and moist right up to planting. Plant at the same depth the plant grew before — burying the stem or exposing the crown both cause trouble. Water in thoroughly to settle soil around the roots and remove air pockets (see watering), then keep the mix evenly moist, not wet. Shelter the plant from harsh sun and wind for one to two weeks, and harden off indoor-raised or tender plants gradually before planting out, protecting them from late frost. Transplant in cool, dull conditions or in the evening rather than in blazing midday sun.
What NOT to do
Do not fertilise a freshly moved plant — feeding damaged roots draws water out of them and worsens the shock; wait until new growth appears. Do not drown it in an effort to help; soggy soil suffocates the very roots it is trying to regrow, tipping shock into root rot. And do not keep digging it up to “check” — every disturbance restarts the clock.
Helping a shocked plant recover
Provide steady, moderate conditions and even moisture, and remove any fully collapsed or dead leaves to reduce the load on the roots. Some gardeners pinch off a portion of top growth or a few flowers so the reduced root system has less to support. Then wait. When it is normal, and exceptions
A brief wobble — some wilting or a few dropped leaves — after transplanting is normal and not a cause for alarm. Judge recovery by new growth, not by the old leaves that may still yellow and drop. Some plants resent root disturbance far more than others: plants with taproots (poppies, dill, many trees from seed) and certain shrubs sulk badly and are best moved young or grown in containers to avoid it, whereas fibrous-rooted plants and most houseplants recover quickly. Is it shock, disease, or pests?
- Wilting/leaf drop that began immediately after repotting or planting → transplant shock; support and wait.
- Decline that started later, with spots, mould or pests → look beyond shock to disease or infestation.
- Soil went soggy after the move → shock is tipping into root rot; ease off water.
- New growth appearing → recovery underway; stop worrying and resume normal care.
Typical recovery timelines
Timelines vary with how much root was disturbed and the plant’s size. A gently repotted houseplant that kept its root ball intact may show no shock at all, or recover in a few days. A divided perennial or a root-washed plant typically sulks for one to three weeks. A planted-out tree or shrub can take a full season to re-establish, and a bare-root or large specimen longer still — which is why they are best planted in the dormant season. Containers versus open ground
Container transplants are easier to protect: you can move the pot into shade, control moisture precisely, and shelter it from wind, so shock is usually brief. Open-ground transplants face the weather, so timing matters most — plant into warm, moist soil in mild, dull conditions or the dormant season, water in well, and mulch to keep roots cool and evenly moist. A note on “tonics”
The most reliable aid is simply careful handling, correct depth, a thorough settling-in watering, and patience. Keep the root zone evenly moist, not wet, and delay feeding until new growth shows — supporting the roots matters far more than any product.
