Anthracnose is one of the most common names in plant pathology — and one of the most misused. It isn’t a single disease but a group of fungal diseases, each caused by a fungus adapted to particular hosts, that produce broadly similar dark, sunken lesions on leaves, stems and fruit. This is a general framework; because the fungus on a sycamore is not the one on beans or mango, susceptibility, timing and the right response vary by plant — always match your response to the specific plant.
What anthracnose is
Anthracnose refers to several fungi (for example species of Colletotrichum and related genera) that infect above-ground plant parts. They share a habit: producing sunken, dark, often spreading lesions, and spores that spread in warm, wet, humid conditions. Most anthracnose fungi are largely host-specific or host-group-specific, so the anthracnose on one plant generally will not jump to unrelated plants — but it spreads readily among susceptible ones.
Common symptoms
- Leaves — dark brown to tan spots and irregular blotches, often following the veins or leaf margins; on shade trees the damage can look like brown, dead areas that lead to early leaf drop.
- Stems and twigs — sunken cankers and shoot dieback, especially on woody plants; these often harbour the fungus over winter.
- Fruit — the classic sign: circular, sunken, dark lesions, sometimes with concentric rings; in wet weather the centres may ooze salmon-pink to orange spore masses (very typical of anthracnose).
- On some crops, flowers and young shoots are blighted too.
Conditions that favour it
- Warm, wet, humid weather and prolonged leaf or fruit wetness.
- Splashing water — rain and overhead irrigation move spores from soil, debris and cankers onto healthy tissue.
- Infected debris and cankers left in place, which carry the fungus from one season to the next.
- Crowded, poorly ventilated plantings that stay wet.
Commonly affected plants
Shade trees (sycamore/plane, ash, oak, maple, dogwood), many vegetables (beans, cucurbits, tomato, pepper), brambles, and tropical and subtropical fruit such as mango, avocado and citrus each have their own anthracnose. The pattern of damage and the practical priorities differ — check what is typical for your specific plant.
Sanitation & removing infected material
Because anthracnose overwinters on fallen leaves, mummified fruit and cankered twigs, sanitation is one of the most effective controls: rake up and dispose of infected leaves and fruit (don’t leave them under the plant), and prune out cankered or dead twigs during dry weather. Do not compost heavily infected material near susceptible plants.
Pruning & airflow
Open the canopy so foliage and fruit dry quickly: thin congested growth, space plants adequately, and keep the area weeded. Faster drying and better air movement directly reduce the leaf-wetness the fungus depends on.
Watering & irrigation practices
Keep foliage and fruit as dry as possible. Water at the base rather than over the leaves, water early in the day so any splashed foliage dries, and avoid working among wet plants (which spreads spores). A mulch layer can reduce spores splashing up from the soil.
Prevention
- Choose resistant varieties and clean, disease-free seed or stock where anthracnose is a recurring problem.
- Space and prune for airflow; avoid overhead watering.
- Clear debris at the end of the season.
- Rotate susceptible annual crops where practical.
Treatment principles
- Act early and fix conditions first — remove affected material, improve airflow, reduce wetness. Established infections are hard to reverse, so prevention and early action matter most.
- If using a product, some protectant fungicides (for example copper-based and other labelled products) are used mainly preventively. There is no single fungicide that suits every plant or every anthracnose — choose one labelled for your plant and this disease, follow the label exactly, and never exceed labelled rates.
- On established trees, anthracnose is often more cosmetic than fatal; focus on tree health and sanitation rather than spraying a large canopy.
When diagnosis is uncertain
