Damage is often terminal by the time it shows.
- Prevention & Control: keep plants vigorous and unstressed (weevils target damaged or old, about-to-flower plants); avoid wounding the base. - Treatment & Management: prevention is everything — grow in fast-draining gritty mix, water sparingly, and never let water sit in the crown. On early rot, unpot, cut all soft tissue back to clean firm flesh, dust with sulfur or cinnamon, let it callus dry for several days, then repot dry in fresh mix and hold off water. - Anthracnose (Colletotrichum agaves):
- Symptoms: the most common leaf disease in warm, wet or crowded conditions — sunken oval lesions, at first water-soaked then turning brown to black with a reddish margin, bearing pinkish spore masses in the centre; lesions coalesce and can rot into the crown.
- Treatment & Management: improve airflow and spacing, keep foliage dry, and avoid overhead watering. Cut off and destroy affected leaves and sterilise tools. Where pressure is high, protect with a copper-based fungicide; do not compost diseased material.
