- Agave Snout Weevil (Scyphophorus acupunctatus):
- Symptoms: The adult is a dull black snout beetle about 1 cm long. The first visible sign is often a rosette that suddenly loosens, wilts and collapses, with the lower leaves shrivelling and the whole crown able to be lifted or toppled by hand. The real damage is done by the grub-like larvae tunnelling through the core and base, and the weevil introduces bacteria that turn the heart into a foul-smelling mush. Look for chewing wounds and oozing near the base.
- Prevention & Control: Keep plants unstressed and inspect regularly, particularly in warm weather and on large plants building toward bloom.
