Most care is cultural – correct soil pH, good drainage, structural pruning and sanitation. When pests or diseases warrant treatment on reachable growth, horticultural oil and insecticidal soap cover scale, mealybug, aphids and mites; Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) handles caterpillars; and copper or sulphur fungicides address leaf spot, mildew, rust and anthracnose. Iron and manganese chelates correct chlorosis. Spray oils in the evening to protect pollinators.
