Remove the bitter white/green heel at the base of each floret, since leaving it in quantity makes infusions taste unpleasantly bitter.   • Lilac / ash borer (Podosesia syringae):
    • Symptoms: Wilting and dieback of individual stems, with round exit holes, sawdust-like frass and sap near the base of older canes; a clearwing-moth larva tunnels the woody stems and can girdle and kill them. This is the most serious lilac pest.
