- Symptoms: Soft green, grey or black insects crowding tender new growth and – most of all – the emerging flower stalk, which becomes sticky with honeydew and may distort. Ants farming the aphids are a giveaway.
- Prevention & Control: Dislodge with a firm jet of water. Small colonies wipe off easily; larger ones respond to insecticidal soap or a light horticultural oil. Preserve ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies, which usually keep aphids in check outdoors.
