The two most common ways to harm a plant are watering too much and watering too little — and confusingly, they can look almost identical: a wilting, yellowing plant might be drowning or parched. Getting the diagnosis right matters, because the fixes are opposite. This is a general guide to telling them apart and correcting each; the exact thresholds vary by plant, so use it as the framework.

Why they look so similar

Both overwatering and underwatering end in the same visible symptom — a stressed, wilting, discolouring plant — because both ultimately stop the roots delivering water to the leaves. Overwatering does it by suffocating and rotting the roots (they can’t take up water even though it’s there); underwatering does it by leaving no water to take up. So you can’t diagnose from the leaves alone — you have to check the soil and roots.

The single best test: check the soil

Push a finger 2–5 cm (1–2 in) into the soil, or lift the pot:

  • Wet/soggy soil + wilting → almost always overwatering. The plant is wilting despite moisture — the roots are failing.
  • Bone-dry soil, light pot, soil pulling from the edges + wiltingunderwatering.

“Wilting in wet soil” is the key tell that stops most people watering a plant that’s already drowning.

Signs of overwatering

  • Soil stays wet for days; heavy pot; sometimes a sour, musty smell.
  • Leaves yellowing (often lower leaves first), soft, limp or translucent.
  • Wilting even though the soil is moist.
  • Brown, mushy, foul-smelling roots (rot); mould or fungus gnats around the soil.
  • Leaf drop, and edema (blister-like bumps) on some plants.

Overwatering is the more common killer, and it leads to root rot.

Signs of underwatering

  • Soil dry and hard; pot very light; soil shrinking away from the pot’s sides.
  • Leaves crisp, brown at edges and tips, dry and brittle rather than soft.
  • Wilting or curling that perks up quickly after watering.
  • Slow growth, leaf drop of older leaves in prolonged drought.

How to fix overwatering

  • Stop watering and let the soil dry out before the next drink.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes and never let it stand in water; empty the saucer.
  • If it’s severe, unpot and check roots — trim mushy black roots and repot into fresh, free-draining mix (see improving soil drainage).
  • Move to better light/airflow so the soil dries at a healthy pace.

How to fix underwatering

  • Water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes, wetting the whole root ball.
  • If the mix has gone hydrophobic (water runs straight through), bottom-water: stand the pot in water for 20–30 minutes so the soil re-absorbs, then drain.
  • Check more often in heat, wind and active growth; consider a more moisture-retentive mix or a larger pot for very thirsty plants.

When it’s neither

Wilting and yellowing also come from too little light, cold or heat stress, pests, disease, fertiliser salts, or being root-bound. If the soil moisture looks correct and watering habits are sound, look at those instead — don’t just change the watering.

Prevent both

  • Use pots with drainage holes and an appropriate mix for the plant.
  • Check the soil before watering rather than watering on a fixed day.
  • Water thoroughly, then let the top of the mix dry to the plant’s preferred point before watering again.
  • Adjust with the seasons — most plants need less in cool, dark months.

My plant is wilting — should I water it? Check the soil first. Wilting in wet soil means stop watering (overwatered); wilting in dry soil means water thoroughly (underwatered).

Which is worse? Overwatering is usually harder to recover from because it rots roots — when unsure, err on the drier side for most plants.
