- Symptoms: Slow decline with yellowing, shrivelling leaves; a diagnostic purplish ring is visible in a cut cross-section of the rhizome or stem base. Roots and lower stem rot away.
- Treatment & Management: There is no reliable cure; remove and destroy badly affected plants and salvage only clean upper growth with sterile tools. Prevent it with sterile media, clean tools between plants, good drainage and airflow, and by avoiding root injury and waterlogging.
- Orchid viruses (Cymbidium mosaic virus / ORSV):
- Symptoms: Chlorotic or necrotic streaks, mosaic mottling, ringspots and colour-break in flowers; growth is stunted and never fully recovers. Symptoms are easily confused with feeding or nutrient problems.
- Treatment & Management: There is no cure: isolate and rogue out confirmed plants to protect the collection. Prevent spread by sterilising cutting tools between every plant (flame or fresh blades), controlling sap-sucking pests that move virus, and buying clean, tested stock.
Growing Difficulties & Abiotic Problems
- Root desiccation and dehydration:
- Cause & Symptoms: Vanda are usually grown bare-rooted in baskets; in dry air the thick roots shrivel and the leaves pleat, wrinkle and droop from lack of water.
- Correction Strategy: Give the high humidity and frequent watering/misting these orchids need — often a daily soak of the roots in warm weather — until the roots turn plump and green, then let them dry between waterings; group plants to raise local humidity.
- Sunburn and heat scorch:
- Cause & Symptoms: Bleached, then brown or black dry patches on the sun-facing side of leaves after a sudden increase in light or intense midday sun through glass.
- Correction Strategy: Acclimatise plants gradually to brighter light and provide light shade during the fiercest midday sun; ensure airflow so leaves do not overheat. Leaves should be a mid-grassy green, not dark (too little light) or yellow-red (too much).
- Salt and fertiliser burn:
- Cause & Symptoms: Blackened, dead root tips and brown leaf-tip scorch from accumulated fertiliser salts, common with the heavy feeding Vanda enjoy.
- Correction Strategy: Feed weakly but regularly (‘weekly, weakly’), and flush the roots with plain water periodically to leach salts; use low-alkalinity water where possible and never feed dry, stressed roots.
What Helps — Products & Tools
Vanda care leans on sanitation and environment more than sprays: sterile blades, cinnamon or a copper fungicide/bactericide for the rots, horticultural oil and insecticidal soap for scale, mealybug and mites, and blue sticky traps plus spinosad for thrips. High humidity, airflow and clean water prevent most trouble; there is no chemical fix for virus — rogue and sterilise.
