- Prevention & Control: Improve airflow and raise humidity a little, and rinse the plant; introduce predatory mites under glass. Treat outbreaks with a light horticultural oil or miticidal soap, testing first and avoiding bright sun to prevent leaf marking.
- Scale insects (Diaspididae & Coccidae):
- Symptoms: Small brown or grey immobile bumps on leaves and stems that suck sap and, if soft scale, leave honeydew and sooty mould; heavy infestations weaken and disfigure the rosette.
- Prevention & Control: Scrape or wipe off with an alcohol-dampened cloth and prune out badly affected parts; horticultural oil smothers crawlers. Inspect new plants, where scale usually arrives.
Diseases & Fungal Issues
- Root & crown rot (over-watering) (Pythium / Phytophthora / Fusarium spp.):
- Symptoms: The number-one killer of Echeveria: the base and central rosette turn soft, brown-black and mushy, lower leaves drop at a touch, and the plant collapses – caused by too-frequent watering, water sitting in the rosette, heavy soil or poor drainage, especially in cool weather.
- Treatment & Management: Prevent it with a gritty, fast-draining mix, watering only when the soil is dry, watering the soil (not the rosette), and good light and airflow. To rescue a rotting plant, cut off the healthy top above the rot, let it callus, and re-root it; discard rotted tissue and old soil.
- Powdery mildew & leaf spot / anthracnose (Erysiphaceae; Colletotrichum spp.):
- Symptoms: A white powdery film (mildew) or sunken tan/brown spots and blotches (leaf spot/anthracnose) on the leaves in humid, stagnant, crowded conditions, sometimes scarring the rosette permanently.
- Treatment & Management: Increase airflow and light, avoid wetting the foliage and splashing, and remove affected leaves. A sulphur or potassium-bicarbonate spray controls mildew; keep plants uncrowded and dry-leaved to prevent spotting.
- Botrytis (grey mould) (Botrytis cinerea):
- Symptoms: Fuzzy grey mould on damaged, dead or over-wet leaves and spent flower stalks in cool damp air, rotting into healthy tissue.
- Treatment & Management: Remove dead leaves and old flower stems promptly, improve ventilation, and keep the foliage dry; avoid overhead water and crowding. Sanitation almost always prevents it.
Growing Difficulties & Abiotic Problems
- Etiolation (too little light):
- Cause & Symptoms: The rosette stretches, the centre elongates, leaves space out and angle down, and colours fade to plain green – the classic sign of insufficient light. The stretch is permanent on those leaves.
- Correction Strategy: Give bright light – a very sunny window or a grow light – increasing gradually. Behead and re-root a badly stretched rosette to restart a compact plant, and rotate for even growth.
- Sunburn / scorch:
- Cause & Symptoms: Bleached white or brown dry patches on the leaves after a sudden move into intense direct sun or a heatwave, especially on plants previously in lower light. The marks are permanent.
- Correction Strategy: Acclimatise gradually to stronger sun over one to two weeks, and provide light shade during extreme midday heat. New growth comes in unblemished once light is appropriate.
- Edema (oedema):
- Cause & Symptoms: Corky, blister-like bumps or rough patches on the undersides of leaves when the plant takes up water faster than it transpires – from over-watering in cool, humid, low-light spells.
- Correction Strategy: Water less and only when the mix is dry, improve light and airflow, and avoid watering in cold dull weather. Damaged leaves stay marked but new growth is normal.
- Loss of colour / leaf drop:
- Cause & Symptoms: Vivid reds, pinks and blues fade to green in low light or with too much nitrogen; lower leaves also drop naturally, but sudden mass leaf-drop signals over-watering or rot.
- Correction Strategy: Provide strong light and ‘stress’ (bright, cool, lean) conditions for best colour, feed sparingly, and check watering and roots if leaves fall en masse.
What Helps – Products & Tools
Echeverias need very little: a gritty, fast-draining succulent/cactus mix and careful watering prevent most trouble. Keep on hand cotton buds and dilute alcohol or horticultural oil/insecticidal soap for mealybug, scale and mites, a systemic drench or beneficial nematodes for root mealybug and vine weevil, and sulphur/potassium-bicarbonate for powdery mildew. Avoid oils in strong sun on the waxy leaves.
