Why hydroponic nutrients are different
Regular garden fertilizer isn’t designed for hydroponics: it may not include all the micronutrients plants normally draw from soil, and it can leave residues. Hydroponic-specific nutrients are “complete” — they supply the full set of macro- and micronutrients in a fully soluble form.
Macro- and micronutrients
A complete formula supplies nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), the secondary nutrients calcium, magnesium and sulfur, and trace micronutrients (iron, manganese, zinc and more). Missing any of these shows up quickly in a soil-free system, which is why “complete” is the key word.
One-part, two-part and three-part
- One-part — simplest; one bottle for the whole grow. Great for beginners and leafy greens.
- Two-part (A & B) — keeps calcium separate from phosphates/sulfates so they don’t react in concentrate; more flexibility across growth stages.
- Three-part — maximum control (grow/bloom/micro mixed to taste); more to manage.

pH and EC matter more than the brand
Two measurements make or break hydroponics:
- pH — controls whether nutrients are actually available to roots; most hydroponic crops do best in roughly the mildly acidic range. Test and adjust regularly.
- EC / PPM — measures how concentrated the solution is. Too weak starves plants; too strong stresses them. Follow the product’s feed chart and your crop’s stage.
No brand can compensate for unmanaged pH and EC — a meter is the most important purchase after the nutrients themselves.

Ignore one-size “secret formulas.” The right strength depends on crop, stage, temperature and system. Start at the lower end of the label’s range, watch the plants, and adjust — leafy greens want a weaker solution than fruiting crops.
