A wilting, drooping plant has lost turgor — the internal water pressure that keeps leaves and stems rigid. The counter-intuitive part is that wilting has two opposite causes: the plant is either too dry or too wet. Because the reflex “a wilting plant needs water” is wrong half the time, the first move is always to check the soil, not the watering can.
The short answer
Push a finger into the soil. Dry → the plant is thirsty; water it thoroughly. Wet → do not add water; the roots are almost certainly suffocating or rotting and cannot take water up. That single check settles the majority of wilting cases.
Too dry

Too wet — the misread case
If the plant wilts but the soil is wet, the cause is the opposite of thirst. Waterlogged soil has no air; roots deprived of oxygen die and begin to rot, and dead roots cannot absorb water — so the plant droops as though parched while standing in mud. This is root rot, and the fix is to stop watering, improve drainage, and in bad cases unpot, cut away brown mushy roots and repot into fresh mix. Shock and root disturbance
Sudden wilting right after repotting, dividing or planting out is usually transplant shock — disturbed or dried roots temporarily cannot supply the leaves. Keep such a plant out of harsh sun, evenly (not excessively) moist, and unfed until it recovers. Physical root damage from cultivation or vine weevil grubs causes the same wilt.
Heat and light causes
Many plants wilt in midday heat and recover by evening even when the soil is moist — this temporary wilt is a normal water-conservation response and needs no action beyond making sure the plant is not also dry. Pest and disease causes
Less commonly, fungal or bacterial vascular wilts (Fusarium, Verticillium, bacterial wilt) block the plant’s water-conducting tissue, causing wilting that is often one-sided, permanent, and unresponsive to correct watering — frequently with browning inside the stem. Root-feeding pests and severe infestations of sap-suckers can also wilt a plant.
What to do now, and what not to do
Check the soil first, every time. Water if dry; withhold and investigate roots if wet. Move a heat-wilted plant into shade and it will recover. Do not water a wilting plant reflexively — if it is overwatered, more water accelerates root death, the most common way well-meaning owners kill a drooping plant.
Recovery, prevention and exceptions
A thirst-wilted plant that has not been dry too long usually recovers fully; a rot-wilted plant recovers only if enough healthy root remains after you cut away the rot. Prevent wilting with pots that drain, a suitable mix, watering to need rather than routine, and shelter from extreme heat. Quick diagnostic logic
- Wilting + dry soil + light pot → thirsty; water thoroughly, expect recovery in hours.
- Wilting + wet soil + heavy pot → do NOT water; suspect root rot; dry out, check roots.
- Wilts at midday, recovers by evening, soil moist → normal heat response; no action.
- Sudden wilt right after repotting/planting → transplant shock; shelter, keep evenly moist, do not feed.
- One-sided or permanent wilt, stem browned inside → vascular wilt disease or a stem/root borer.
How long recovery takes
A plant wilted purely from thirst, caught before leaves crisp, usually firms up within 2–24 hours of a thorough soak. A plant wilted from overwatering recovers only if enough healthy root survives after you correct drainage and remove rot — expect a week or more, and new growth as the real sign of recovery. A plant that never recovers overnight despite moist soil has a root or vascular problem, not a watering one.
Plant-specific notes
Peace lilies flop dramatically when dry and spring back within hours of watering — handy as an early-warning plant, but repeated severe wilting damages them. Large-leaved plants (hydrangeas, ligularias, squashes, big aroids) wilt in midday heat even in moist soil simply because leaves lose water faster than roots supply it; if they recover in the cool of evening, that is normal. Cucumbers, squash and melons that wilt suddenly and permanently often have squash vine borer or bacterial wilt rather than a water problem — check the stem base. Newly potted or planted specimens wilt from root disturbance; support them rather than drowning them.
What recovery looks like, and prevention
Firm, upright new leaves signal the roots are working again. Prevent wilting with pots that actually drain, a mix suited to the plant, watering to need rather than a rigid schedule, and shade or extra water during heat waves. If a plant wilts repeatedly between waterings, it is usually root-bound or in too small a pot — pot up rather than watering ever more often.
