Soil amendments are materials you mix into soil to improve it — better structure, drainage, aeration, water retention or fertility. The right amendment depends on the problem you’re solving, and one common “fix” (adding sand to clay) usually backfires. Here’s what actually works.

Organic vs mineral amendments

  • Organic (compost, well-rotted manure, leaf mould, composted bark, coir) — improve structure, feed soil life, and help both drainage and water retention. The all-rounder.
  • Mineral (perlite, pumice, coarse grit, vermiculite) — mainly change the physical balance of air and water; they don’t feed the soil.

Improving different soils

  • Heavy clay — add generous organic matter (and grit for planting pockets). Organic matter is what opens clay long-term.
  • Sandy soil — add organic matter and, if needed, vermiculite to hold water and nutrients that otherwise drain away.

The sand-on-clay myth

Adding a bit of sand to clay does not reliably fix drainage — unless you add a huge amount, sand plus clay can set like concrete and drain worse. The dependable fix for clay is organic matter, added repeatedly over time, which builds crumb structure and lets water and air through. Don’t chase the sand shortcut.

How to use amendments well

  • Match the amendment to the actual problem (air? water-holding? fertility?).
  • Incorporate evenly rather than in a single buried layer.
  • For beds, top-dressing with compost and letting worms work it in (“no-dig”) builds structure with less effort.
  • Improving soil is ongoing, not one-and-done.
