- Prevention & Control: Pick off and burn enlarged big buds through winter. There is no reliable spray; the practical cure is to grow resistant cultivars and to grub out and replace bushes showing reversion (narrowed, few-lobed leaves and poor fruit set).
- Currant clearwing borer (Synanthedon tipuliformis):
- Symptoms: Larvae tunnel down the pith of the stems, causing scattered shoots to wilt, weaken and die back; cutting a suspect stem reveals a hollow, frass-filled centre.
- Prevention & Control: Prune out and burn affected stems in winter to remove larvae, keep bushes vigorous, and use pheromone traps to monitor and reduce the egg-laying moths. Renew old wood regularly.
