Chinese juniper is a conifer, so it does not produce true flowers at all – it reproduces with cones. Plants are usually dioecious, meaning male and female cones are carried on separate specimens. In spring the male plants release clouds of yellow pollen from small pollen cones, while female plants bear inconspicuous green cones that later ripen into the fleshy, glaucous blue seed cones commonly called juniper berries. Pollination is by wind, so there are no petals, scent or nectar to attract insects.
