Planting peonies requirement

In planting peonies, choose a deep, fertile, humus-rich moist soil with good drainage. Here are some tips on how to grow a stunning peony plant:

  • Check your purchased tuber if it is healthy – fleshy, firm and mold free. Bare root plants can dry up during transit, which is why it is advisable to soak them in a bucket of water for 2 to 4 hours to rehydrate before replanting.
  • Choose the location wisely; peonies don’t like disturbance so make sure they are protected from strong winds. Place them away from trees or shrubs to prevent competition of moisture and nourishment. Plant them 3 to 4 feet apart for good air circulation.
  • Peonies should be planted with the eyes pointing up and just below the soil’s surface. If they are planted too deep, they will not bloom.
  • Peonies prefer a chilly environment with direct sun to bloom, but can also do well in an afternoon shade. It requires at least 10 hours of sunlight a day. Warmth and moisture will signal the tubers to start growing. So make sure the soil is always moist but not wet.
  • Peonies should be planted in the ground before the first frost, in the fall around months of late September and October. Spring-planted peonies don’t perform well; they generally tend to lag about a year behind than those planted during the fall.
  • If you miss the planting window, you must store the root tuber in pots or box. In pots, you will need either garden soil or potting soil that is just barely moist. Plant the roots in the pot making sure that they are covered with soil and leaves on all sides and place it outdoors in a shady and protected area. Box storage requires a plastic lining with peat moss. Insert the roots in the moss, making sure the roots are not touching one another and that they are completely buries. Then store the box in an area with nearly freezing temperature until the ground is workable again.

Peonies thrive on benign neglect; fertilize the soil before planting and that would be enough. Patience is the key in caring for this shrub as it usually takes a few years to settle in once planted, but can live for a hundred years.
