- Prevention & Control: The cure is cultural: let the medium dry, switch to a fast-draining mineral mix, top-dress with grit or sand, and use yellow sticky traps plus a Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) drench for the larvae.

- Root & basal stem rot (Fusarium / Pythium / Phytophthora spp.):
- Symptoms: The number-one killer of this genus: tissue at the base or roots turns soft, water-soaked, translucent then black, often with a foul smell, and the plant collapses or topples — frequently after a cool, wet spell or overwatering. Rot can travel up unseen inside the stem.
- Treatment & Management: Prevention is decisive: use a very free-draining mineral-rich mix, water sparingly only when warm and actively growing, keep the neck dry, and ensure strong airflow. If rot starts, act fast — unpot, cut back to firm, clean tissue, dust the wound with sulphur or cinnamon, let it callus hard in dry shade, then re-root. Sterilise tools between cuts.
- Soft rot / bacterial collapse (Erwinia / Pectobacterium spp.):
- Symptoms: Rapid, slimy, foul-smelling breakdown of the body, often entering through a wound, mealybug injury or a cold-and-wet episode; the plant can turn to mush within days.
