- Prevention & Control: Encourage lady beetles, lacewings and parasitic wasps, hand-remove caterpillars or use Bt, and reserve insecticidal soap for heavy aphid outbreaks.

- False blossom (Cranberry false blossom phytoplasma):

- Symptoms: Weak, yellowing, dying patches with rotted roots and runners in waterlogged, poorly drained beds.
- Treatment & Management: Manage water carefully with good drainage, avoid stagnant flooding out of season, and remove affected plants; prevention through site and water management is key.
Growing Difficulties & Abiotic Problems
- Iron chlorosis and wrong soil pH:
- Cause & Symptoms: Like all Vaccinium, cranberries need strongly acidic soil; on soil that is not acid enough the young leaves yellow between green veins from iron lock-out and growth stalls.
- Correction Strategy: Grow in acidic, peaty, moisture-retentive soil (about pH 4.0-5.5), acidify with sulphur and acidic organic matter, water with rainwater, and apply chelated iron for a quick correction.
- Water and drainage management:
- Cause & Symptoms: Cranberries need consistent moisture but rot in stagnant waterlogging; drought browns the mats and shrivels fruit, while poor drainage invites root rot.
- Correction Strategy: Keep the bed evenly moist with an acidic organic mulch, ensure water can drain rather than stagnate, and protect from hard frost during bloom (commercial growers flood for frost and harvest, but garden beds simply need steady even moisture).
