Fertilizing confuses a lot of growers: how much, how often, which product, and when to stop. This guide covers the decision-making — the “how and when” — rather than naming a single best product. It’s a general framework; the right feeding varies by plant, product and situation, so always follow the label of whatever you use and match it to your plant.

Why plants need nutrients

Plants make their own food (sugars) from light, water and air, but they need mineral nutrients from the soil to build tissues, roots, flowers and fruit. In the ground there’s usually a reserve; in pots, and in poor or heavily-cropped soils, those nutrients run down and need topping up — that’s what fertilizer does. Fertilizer feeds the plant’s nutrient needs; it is not “plant food” in place of light and water.

Macro- and micronutrients (at a useful level)

Plants need macronutrients in larger amounts — nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), plus calcium, magnesium and sulfur — and micronutrients (iron, manganese, zinc and others) in tiny amounts. A balanced feeding programme supplies them; deficiencies of even a trace element can show as discoloured or distorted growth.

N-P-K basics

The three numbers on a fertilizer label are the N-P-K ratio:

  • N (nitrogen) — drives leafy, green vegetative growth.
  • P (phosphorus) — supports roots, flowering and fruiting.
  • K (potassium) — overall vigour, flowering/fruiting and stress tolerance.

Feed by growth stage

Match feeding to what the plant is doing: a general/balanced feed during active leafy growth; a flowering/fruiting formulation as plants set buds and crops, if appropriate for that plant. Over-feeding nitrogen to a flowering plant can give lush leaves and few flowers.

When to feed: the growing season

Feed during active growth — typically spring and summer for most plants — when the plant can actually use the nutrients. Reduce or stop feeding during dormancy or slow growth (autumn/winter for many plants), because feeding a resting plant just leaves unused salts in the soil that can damage roots. Match your plant’s own rhythm (some tropicals grow year-round indoors; some plants are winter growers).

Container vs in-ground plants

Container plants depend almost entirely on you: the limited soil holds few reserves, watering flushes nutrients out of the drainage holes, and roots quickly exhaust the mix — so pots need more regular, lighter feeding. In-ground plants draw on a larger soil reserve and generally need feeding less often; improving the soil with organic matter also supplies nutrients slowly.

Slow-release vs liquid feeds

  • Liquid/water-soluble — fast-acting, easy to control, applied every week or few weeks in growth; washes out, so needs repeating.
  • Slow/controlled-release (granules, pellets, coated prills) — release nutrients gradually over weeks or months; convenient and steady, less precise.
  • Organic (compost, worm castings, fish/seaweed) — feed slowly and improve the soil.

Feeding houseplants & containers (the specifics)

Indoor and potted plants have their own quirks worth knowing:

  • Nutrient depletion — potting mix is exhausted within a couple of months of active growth, so established houseplants benefit from regular dilute feeding in spring/summer.
  • Reduced winter feeding — most houseplants slow in winter’s low light; cut back or stop feeding then.
  • Salt build-up — fertilizer salts accumulate in pots, showing as a white crust or brown leaf tips. Periodically flush the pot with plenty of plain water to leach salts out.
  • Newly repotted plants — fresh mix usually contains nutrients, so wait several weeks before feeding a freshly repotted plant.
  • Dilute — many growers feed indoor plants at half the labelled strength more often, rather than full strength; follow the product’s houseplant guidance.

Deficiency vs other causes

Yellowing or poor growth isn’t always a nutrient shortage — overwatering, poor light, root problems, pests and pH issues cause the same look. Rule those out before reaching for fertilizer; feeding a plant that’s actually overwatered makes things worse.

Over-fertilizing & salt build-up

More is not better. Excess fertilizer scorches roots and leaf tips/margins (brown, crispy edges), can cause wilting despite moist soil, and leaves a salt crust on soil and pots. If you suspect over-feeding, stop, flush the soil thoroughly with plain water, and resume lightly. When unsure, under-feed rather than over-feed.

Watering interactions

Feed onto moist soil, never bone-dry soil — fertilizer on dry roots can burn them. Water first if needed, then feed. Because watering flushes nutrients from pots, container feeding and watering go hand in hand.

Newly planted or stressed plants

Hold off feeding recently planted, transplanted or stressed plants until they’re actively growing again — feeding stressed roots can do more harm than good. Let them establish first.

Reading the label — and why dosage differs

The label is authoritative: it gives the correct dilution, frequency and often plant-specific rates. Dosage varies by product concentration and by plant, which is exactly why there’s no universal rate — a strong concentrate and a gentle organic feed are used very differently. Measure rather than eyeballing, and don’t exceed the labelled rate.

  • Feeding dormant or winter-resting plants.
  • Over-feeding (especially nitrogen), causing leaf-tip burn and few flowers.
  • Feeding dry roots, or feeding a plant that’s actually overwatered.
  • Feeding newly repotted plants too soon.
  • Ignoring salt build-up in pots (not flushing).
