- Correction Strategy: Site in partial to full shade with shelter from strong wind and early sun on frozen mornings, and keep the soil consistently moist. Trim badly scorched leaves; new growth in a better position will be unmarked.
- Drought / dryness stress:
- Cause & Symptoms: Wilting, leaf browning and bud drop in dry soil, especially in sun or under the rain shadow of walls and larger plants.
- Correction Strategy: Keep the soil evenly moist with a generous organic mulch, water in dry spells, and avoid hot, dry, exposed positions. Consistent moisture in shade is the key to a lush, healthy plant.

Skimmia’s most important ‘product’ is not a pesticide but soil correction: ericaceous compost, acidic mulch and sequestered iron/micronutrients to cure and prevent chlorosis. For pests, horticultural oil and insecticidal soap cover scale, red spider mite and aphids. A phosphonate-type product protects valued shrubs from Phytophthora in wet soils. Moist, acidic, humus-rich soil and a sheltered, shaded site do far more than any spray.
