A fast, vigorous tree needs little chemistry. Keep insecticidal soap or neem for aphids, ant baits or barriers to break the ant-aphid link, Bt or spinosad for budworm, webworm and caterpillars, protein-bait or pheromone traps plus pod bagging for fruit fly, and a copper or biological fungicide for damping-off and cankers. Clean pruning tools and good drainage are the main defenses.
